sharing tree sharing tree The annual spouses Christmas Party on December 5 started out a festive December. A school "snow day" delayed the Christmas Party for 1st and 2nd graders at Carpenter School until December 19.

Dennis Pilaske, a curator at the Chippewa Nature Center, told about the new exhibits at the Center to highlight our December 26 meeting.

Jim Peckrul of MCCVB November started off with reports from the committees on their plans for the year. Jim Peckrul, Executive Director of the Midland County Convention & Visitors Bureau stressed the importance of tourism on the economy of Midland at our November 21 meeting. One event last summer attracted 6000 people and contributed an estimated $1.7 million to our economy. Results from the Travel and Adventure sales campaign was the highlight of the November 28 meeting. We sold 5% above our goal. At the meeting, we also give money to 2 organizations working with child care providers.

Crop walkers at H. H. Dow Museum The Crop Walk on October 1 was a big success. Over 400 walkers participated. At the October 3 meeting, Lt. Governor Tim Braum inducted our new officers for the 2000-2001 year. President Lyn Knapp presented her vision for the 2000-2001 Kiwanis year at the October 10 meeting. Primary goals are: (1) Develop new members, (2) Involve more members in service projects, (3) Increase our recognition in the community, and (4) Focus on the Midland community. Other goals include initiation of a Strategic Planning Process, a new fund raising program, establishing a Builders Club, membership growth and retention, new member orientation and mentoring, and the reward and recognition of exceptional service efforts. Lyn capped the last point by presenting a plaque to Bob Goodenough in recognition his long years of service to Kiwassee and the Midland community(former Mayor). Steve Rosin of Delta College spoke at our October 17 meeting on the current status of Work Force Training and Education programs at the school and how these will be enhanced if the millage before the voters on November 7th passes. The upcoming Nut sale was the focus of the October 24 meeting. The West Midland Family Center program was the topic of the October 31 meeting. Executive Director Greg Dorrian told us of the history of the Center and some of the current programs.

Reports from Senior Youth supported projects highlighted our September 5 meeting. Rebecca Jacobs, a junior from Dow High, described the Blue Lake International Exchange Program. Paul Hamer described the work of the Midland County Youth Leadership program. Diane Tomian and Kristian Wright, seniors at Dow High and Midland High respectively, told of the World Affairs Seminar at the University of Wisconsin. Gary Hughes, the new Superintendant of the Midland Public Schools, keynoted the September 12 meeting with some of the challenges he sees with the local school system. The various project committees reported on their activities at our September 19 and September 26 meetings.

The new CEO and President of the Midland Center For The Arts, Michael Tiknis, told of his visions for the Center at the August 1 meeting. The meeting of August 8 kicked off the sales of tickets for our Travel and Adventure Series. Andy Rapp, Professor of Competitive Speaking at Northwood University, gave a run down of the importance of verbal communications at our August 15 meeting. The annual Crop Walk was the topic for our August 22 meeting. Chair Linda Cline gave the run down of the walk's history and purpose. Four delegates to the District Convention in Grand Rapids reported on the convention at the August 29 meeting. Our chapter took first place awards for our scrapbook and for Salvation Army Bell Ringing.

Reports from the International Kiwanis Convention in Miami Beach highlighted our July 11 meeting. Carol Rumba also brought us up to date on our I.D.D. giving. We are within $425 of our $22,000 goal. Our annual picnic at the Pinecrest home was July 18. A presentation on the prevention of strokes given by Jeff Gandy was the main topic at our July 25 meeting.

Our June 6 meeting was a run down of the millage for countywide transportation that will be on the ballots on August 8. Jim Secor was the presenter. Members of the Dow High School were guests at our June 13 meeting. They spoke of their various activities and presented us with a check for $163 for our Iodine Deficiency Disorder fund drive. We presented them with a check for $100 from proceeds from our online store. June 20 was our annual cookout at Emerson Park. On June 27, Kathy Ellison and Nancy Wolanin of the Midland Public Schools told about the Reading Plan for Michigan and how it is being implemented locally. A group from the SHARE program sponsored by the Salvation Army provided entertainment at this meeting.

At our membership roundup on May 2, Dana Kremm, Director at Mott Children's Hospital, Ann Arbor, was the speaker. Kiwanis of Michigan helped start the hospital in 1922. Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation continues to support many programs for children who are patients there. The Pig Auction on May 9, thanks to the enthusiastic leadership of Auctioneer Pigmaster Don Winger, raised $510.30. May 16 meeting was a Prayer Breakfast at the Salvation Army with Pat Riepma, coach at Northwood University as speaker. Judge James Wilson gave us additional insight into our court system on May 23. Lee Lucus highlighted our May 30 meeting with comments on Edgar Guest.

The May 7 issue of the Midland Daily News had two articles on Kiwassee activities: The Reading Is Fundamental program and the Dow High School Key Club. On May 5, Midland County Lawyers Association recognized Kiwassee Kiwanis with the Annual Liberty Bell Award for our work with the FACE project.

At the District 19 Spring Meeting in Saginaw on April 9, Kiwassee won an award for best club scrapbook. We also received recognition for sponsoring a new Key Club.

Dahlia Hill Denise Spencer, Director of the Midland Foundation, highlighted the April 4 meeting with a rundown of a county-wide visioning project which includes a needs assessment and process to address these needs. Also at that meeting, Dave Morrison and Charles Breed expressed the needs for coffee grounds to help control wire worms at Dahlia Hill. Carol Speltz, Administrator of Pinecrest Farms, brought us up-to-date on developments at Pinecrest at our April 11 meeting. Pinecrest was the first service project of Kiwassee when it was founded 33 years ago. Karol Childs, Director of the Midland Center for the Arts Hall of Ideas and Education and Outreach Program, thanked Kiwassee for their support of the Center's efforts for at-risk youth when she spoke to the group on April 18. She updated us on that program and other activities of the Center. The current activities of the FACE organization was the topic of the April 25 meeting. Jeff Servinski, Director of Training Programs was the speaker. Kiwassee played a part in getting FACE started 11 years ago.

Roger Stauffer, the newly appointed chaplain of the MidMichigan Regional Center, told of his new assignment at the March 7 meeting. Loretta Schultz, coordinator of the "Success by 6" program for the Saginaw Valley Regional 4 C, talked about brain development in children at the March 14 meeting. The guest at the March 21 meeting was Betty Owen, manager of MBS International Airport. She told of the airport's history and current activity. The club's mid-term reports highlighted the March 28 meeting.

Key Club H.H.Dow High School The H. H. Dow High School Key Club was chartered February 21 in a ceremony at the school cafeteria. George Brown, Key Club Administrator for Kiwanis, presented the charter. Induction of officers was made by Brooke Nowakowski and Jenni Fish, representating the Michigan District and International Key Clubs. The new officers are Molly Hayes, President; Jacquelyn Conway, Vice President; Tammy Hshieh, Secretary; and Lindsay Lee, Treasurer. Martha Briggs and Mike Simon are the club advisors. Mike Briggs is the Kiwassee coordinator.

City of MidlandThe Sewer Bond Proposal of the City of Midland was the topic of the February 15 meeting. Noel Bush of the city administration and Councilmen Hollis McKeag and John Coppage explained the proposal.

heartFebruary 8 marked the annual Valentine's Day luncheon for spouses. Carol Rumba entertained us with singing while Linda Smith of the Creative Spirit Center told us of the activities of the Center.

The Midland County Educational Service Agency (ESA) was the topic of our February 1 meeting. Superintendent Bill McKinstry told of the functions of the agency.

The January 25 meeting featured Jeanette Obermiller of Family and Children's Service as guest speaker. She spoke of the Doula program of which Kiwassee is an active sponsor. The program interacts with expectant mothers.

Pamela Clark, Station manager for Delta College Quality Public Broadcasting, spoke at January 18 meeting on the changes currently underway that will affect TV viewing.

At the January 11 meeting, Pastor Matt Shea, Youth Pastor at the Community Church of the Nazarene talked on his calling as a pastor.

The results of a survey on alcohol abuse by teenagers was the highlight of the January 4 meeting. Dick Skochdopole, chair of our FACE committee, supported by Greg Stifler, Circle of Health Director, talked on the significance of the survey and what is being done to attack the problem.
