NEWS 2009

At our December 29 meeting, Lizzie Gregory, Denise Sirius, and Jeff Yoder(faculty counselor) of the Midland High School Key Club reported on their recent activities. Also, Bridget Sullivan from the Railway Family Center in Colemen reported on activities of the Center. The December 22 meeting was a presentation by the Audit Committee of their annual report. Our Annual Christmas Party for spouses was December 15. Our December 8 meeting was our annual Kid's Christmas Party. This year it was held at Eastlawn School. The Kiwassee Kiwanis Chime Choir made their World Premier performance at the December 1 meeting.

Updates on the work of the Kiwassee Kiwanis Foundation and the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation were the highlights of our November 24 meeting. Access to Recreation Midland Sergeant Rich Harnois of the Midland County Sheriff's Department spoke about the drug problem in Midland County at our November 17 meeting. On November 10, Cal Goeders of the Midland Kiwanis Club spoke about their efforts at Longview Elementary School to enhance student knowledge of science and math. Access to Recreation Midland was the theme of the November 3 meeting. Greg Dorrien, Director of the West Midland Family Center, was the speaker.

Judy Harris of Midland Quilters spoke about needs of Haitian children at our October 27 meeting. The October 20 meeting was a preview of our Candy and Nut Fund Raiser which will start in November. Mike Hayes, founder of Main Street Consulting, spoke on some of the economic issues facing the Great Lakes Bay Regional Alliance at our October 13 meeting. The inductions of officers for the 2009-2010 fiscal year was the main topic at our our October 6 meeting.

Legacy Center for Student Success

The President's Annual Report was the main topic at our September 29 meeting. Our September 15 and September 22 meetings were year-end committee reports. Officer Chris Wenzel, Midland Police Department S.W.A.T. Team, was the speaker at our September 8 meeting. At our September 1 meeting, Dick Dolinski, founder and leader of the Legacy Center for Student Success, spoke about recent studies his organization had made on factors influencing learning.

Crop Walk Senior Youth was the highlight of our August 25 meeting. Terri Malek-Madani spoke about the Dow College Opportunity Program community service field trip to Detroit. Nathan Schell told about his Eagle Scout project to rebuild the front porch on the Caregiving Network building. Sean Leppek and Trish Abaco, of the Dow High School Key Club, reviewed the summer activities of the club. Greg Rogers, President of MidMichigan Medical Center, gave a talk entitled Update on Journey to Wellness at our August 18 meeting. The kickoff of sales for the 2009-2010 Travel and Adventure Series was the main item at our August 11 meeting. At our August 4 meeting, Carol Rumba, Co-Chair for the 2009 Crop Walk, outlined plans for our participation in this walk this year. The walk will be Sunday afternoon, October 4.

Midland Tomorrow At our July 28 meeting, Jess Atwell, Economic Development Manager of Midland Tomorrow, spoke on recent activities of his organization. Also, Erin Lauderbach, Professional and Resource Development Coordinator of Midland County ESA, spoke about the Parent Conference which her organization is planning for November 7. The 94th Kiwanis International Convention was the topic of our July 21 meeting. Attendee Renee Castellon reported. The North Midland Family Center was the program for our July 14 meeting. Linda Clark, Executive Director, was the speaker. Our July 7 meeting was our annual picnic at Pinecrest.

Camp Fish Tales Mike Briggs reported on the findings and recommendations of the Public Relations Task Force at our June 30 meeting. Board Member Frank Champagne of Camp Fish Tales related experiences at the Camp at our June 23 meeting. Also, Fire Chief Lee Garcia of the Midland Fire Department brought us up-to-date on progress at the Department. At our June 16 meeting, Allan Thiele, a member of United Church of Christ told about his experiences as a volunteer leader on mission trips for his church to New Orleans following Hurricane Katrina. Our June 9 meeting was our annual cookout at Emerson Park. The North Midland Family Center was the program for our June 2 meeting. Linda Clark, Executive Director, was the speaker.

Greg Dorrien, Director of the West Midland Family Center, told about some of the activities of the Center at our May 26 meeting. At our May 19 meeting, President Ray Senesac told about the history of our national anthem, and member Bruce Vickey told about volunteer work he does in Florida with immigrants. Our May 12 meeting was our annual Pig Auction. It was held at the Midland Community Center. We had a special Kids Against Hunger meal. At our May 5 meeting, Jack Telfer, Editor of the Midland Daily News, talked about changes in the newspaper industry.

Keith Priddy, President and CEO of Northwood University, spoke about the University at our April 28 meeting. April 21 was our annual Prayer Luncheon. Don Winger reminisced on some of his life experiences. Casey Salminen, chief Friend Raiser for Eagle Village, with help from board member Bob Spears, spoke about the Village at our April 14 meeting. Bridget Sullivan, Director of the Railway Family Center in Coleman, talked about the Center at our April 7 meeting.

Midland Public Schools Superintendent Carl Ellinger discussed the May 5th Midland County Revenue Enhancement Millage Proposal at our March 31 meeting. President Ray Senesac presented a midyear recap of club activities at our March 24 meeting. At our March 17 meeting, Renee Yates announced plans for The Annual Golf Outing Fundraiser, scheduled for Friday, May 15, at the PohlCat Golf Course in Mt. Pleasant. Jean Senninger, Administrator at Pinecrest Farms, told about the new building at their facility at our March 10 meeting. Our March 3 meeting highlighted Senior Youth activities. Natalie Fort and Elaine Vo of the Midland High School Key Club talked about some of their activities. Senior Youth Co-Chair Terri Malek-Madani reviewed the Dow College Preparation Program which she personally directs at the West Midland Family Center.

Midland Jan Lampman, Executive Direction of The ARC of Midland, reviewed some of the programs sponsored by her organization at our February 24 meeting. Tina Hickey of the Mid Michigan Community Action told about the WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program in Midland County at our February 17 meeting. At our February 10 meeting, City Manager Jon Lynch spoke about the current economic challenges the City of Midland is facing. At our February 3 meeting, Jillian Oldenburg of Coleman High School and Sam Tzou of Dow High School spoke about the Midland County Youth Leadership Program. Sam with Tom Dukes then spoke about the activities of the Dow High School Key Club.

Reports on our Travel and Adventure and Candy and Nuts fund raisers highlighted our January 27 meeting. The January 20(Inauguration Day) meeting was limited to presentations and announcements. The annual Audit Committee report was the program for the January 13 meeting. At our January 6 meeting, Mike Briggs gave a statistical report on a club assessment survey in which members participated last November.
