NEWS - 1998On Tuesday, December 29 1998, Ki-Wassee sponsored a Ki-Wassee Day at the Midland Center for the Arts. There was free admission for all to the Hall of Ideas and museum areas of the Center. At our December 1st meeting, we presented at check to Mary Lynn Shafer as some seed money to help a Midland Children's Museum which is under development under the auspices of the Midland Center for the Arts. The museum will be for children under the age of 12.
The Midland CROP walk covers a 10 kilometer route starting at the Midland Center for the Arts, going through the Dow Gardens, up Main Street to the H. H. Dow Historical Museum, down the rail trail to Emerson Park, over the tridge to the Farmer's Market, up and down the downtown Main Street, then back to the Arts Center via Rodd, Nelson, and Helen streets.
Our online store is now operational. Use it as an entry point for making online purchases of books, videos, CDs, and similar items from leading Internet marketers. When you order through our store, we get a referral commission which we can use to fund our service projects. At our August 18 Membership Roundup meeting, Vince Smith, General Manager of the Michigan Division of The Dow Chemical Co. talked on the future of the Michigan Division. He emphasized the importance of Dow employees serving as community service volunteers.Click here for pictorial highlights of the 1998 Division convention. At the Kiwanis International convention in July, Ki-Wassee received a Honorable Mention Award for our Pinecrest Homes project. At the June 23 meeting, the Ki-Wassee Foundation reported that the Foundation had given a computer to the Midland Juvenile Care Center. The computer will be used in their educational efforts in helping young people to become productive members of the community. On June 6 and 7, some 18 Ki-Wassee members plus a wife, granddaughter, and child spent 2 1/2 hours each at the Midland Art Fair passing out 800 balloons (with Midland Art Fair and Kiwassee Kiwanis on them) and some 700 FACE pamphlets advocating guidelines for low risk alcohol use. These were well received by the fair-goers. This activity was sponsored by the Kiwassee FACE committee. |
