NEWS 1999

We celebrated the Holiday season with several special programs. On December 7 we had our annual spouses Christmas party. Randy Swierzbin entertained with piano music. Carol Rumba lead the group with carol singing. Wendell Meyer told about the work of the Kiwanis of Michigan Foundation. On December 14, we had a Kid's Christmas Party at Eastlawn School. Carol again led caroling. Santa Claus distributed 104 gifts which were donated by Kiwasee members. Events from the party were televised by Channel 5 on Christmas Eve. On December 21, Major Madrid talked about the Salvation Army bell ringing tradition. He mentioned that the bell ringing by Kiwassee Kiwanis volunters had brought in over $5,500 this year. On December 28 we reminisced with bell ringing stories and other highlights of the year.

Joe Falls, Sports Editor of The Detroit News, highlighted our membership roundup at the November 30 meeting with antedotes on coaches, players, teams, and fans.

At our November 23 meeting, Joe Kchodl, Program Director for the North Midland Family Center, spoke of the work which is being done with children and families at the Center. The Center provides educational, athletic and cultural activities in cooperation with other groups. Kiwassee has supported several of their projects.

Nutmaster Jim Rawjewski kicked off the annual Holiday Nut Sale fund raiser at the October 26 meeting. New this year will be smoked almonds. Visit the Nut Page for this year's offerings.

George Brown, Key Club Administrator for the Kiwanis Michigan District, and Jenni Fish, a Key Club Lt. Governor, gave an overview of Key Club activity at the October 19 meeting. Our efforts to initiate Key Clubs in our local high schools are starting to bear some fruit. An advisor for Dow High is already in place.

KiWassee CyberZine, our online magazine, is now operational. It is a place where members, and others, can go to do searches and to get sports scores, stock quotes, technology news, and other information. It includes pictures of recent Kiwassee activities. Revenues from click-throughs from the site will go to help fund our service projects. KiWassee OnLine, our online store, has been expanded in anticipation of the Holiday Season. The KiWassee Web Portal has been expanded to give an advertisement-free way of accessing popular and useful web sites.

Lt. Governor Don Hazekamp installed the 1999-2000 officers at the October 5 meeting. See pictures in the KiWassee CyberZine. President Ed Flagg shared his vision and goals for the new year at the October 12 meeting.

A large group of Kiwassee members helped with the Crop Walk on October 3.

On his final report as a TV new anchor on September 24, Hugh Downs reported on the work which Kiwanis International is doing to try to eliminate IDD. Kiwassee continues in its active support of this project.

On a beautiful September 17, a large delegation of Kiwanians and family members helped escort members of the Pinecrest Home through the Dow Gardens as part of the Day of Caring.

Mike Cauchy of the Midland Public Schools spoke at the September 14 meeting on what the school system is doing to help teachers integrate technology with their curriculum.

At the September 7 meeting, James Muffett, Founder and President of the Foundation for Traditional Values spoke on the organization and its educational program.

On August 31, Ed Flagg, Jack Higgins, and Wendell Meyer reviewed highlights of the recent District meeting. For the 3rd year in a row, we won the award for "best scrapbook". We were also one of only five clubs to gain recognition for contributing over $100 per member to the Kiwanis International IDD project.

On August 24, Linda Cline kicked off the 1999 Midland Area Crop Walk Program to be held Sunday, October 3.

Margy Lee, Principal of Leiphart School, explained the Alternative One program of the Midland Public Schools at the August 17 meeting.

August 10 was the kickoff of the 1999 Travel & Adventure series.

On August 3, Gary Jones, President of Midland County Habitat for Humanity, reviewed the organization's 10 year history.

At the Membership Roundup on July 27, Cameron Knowles, WSGW radio talk show host, spoke of the different ways that his station serves the community while being a commercial enterprise.

At the July 20 meeting, the IDD committee reported on our progress in meeting our pledge to the joint effort of Kiwanis International and UNICEF to eliminate Iodine Deficiency Disorder. We are meeting our commitment through pledges from individual members, pig money, and the purchase of Kroger and Meijer gift certificates. We also honored 5 of our charter members with Hixon awards. The honorees were Max Bottomley, Howard Christensen, Bill Cook, Doug Lake, and Fred Lowes.

On May 15, we planted petunias along Eastman Road. See the Midland Blooms page for pictures..

Doug Snoddy, Global Y2K Program Director of The Dow Chemical Co., spoke on the Y2K issue at the May 4 meeting.

At our April 13 Membership Roundup meeting, John Telfer, editor of the Midland Daily News talked on media credibility.

At the Divisional meeting on March 19, Ki-Wassee received awards for Service, Growth, Worldwide Service Project, the International Foundation Annual Club Gift, and Scrapbook. The Scrapbook award was a First Place ribbon.
